brands hatch 2026

Chris Griffiths |

From its beginnings as a grass-track racing venue in the 1920s to hosting Formula One, British Superbikes, GT racing and touring car championships, Brands Hatch Circuit has played a major role in British motorsport for a century. Located in Kent, this famous racing venue is known for its dramatic elevation changes, challenging corners and exceptional spectator viewing.

Today, Brands Hatch continues to attract thousands of motorsport enthusiasts each year. With a packed calendar of national and international racing events, it remains a favourite among drivers, teams and fans.

In this guide, we explore the history of Brands Hatch, how the circuit developed, what makes its layout so challenging, and the major racing events taking place in 2026 and 2027. We'll also highlight the events Pit walk will be attending and where you can find us during each race weekend.

The History of Brands Hatch: From Grass Track to Motorsport Icon

The story of Brands Hatch began in 1926, when a former mushroom field near West Kingsdown, Kent, was identified as a suitable location for competitive sport. The site's natural, bowl-shaped terrain initially attracted cyclists and cross-country runners, with motorcycle racers also beginning to use the grass track within its first few years.

Motorcycle racing soon became the venue's main attraction, establishing Brands Hatch as a growing destination for two-wheeled motorsport. However, the outbreak of the Second World War brought racing to a halt, with the site temporarily converted into a military facility.

Competitive racing returned during the late 1940s, and in 1950, the introduction of a permanent tarmac surface allowed cars to compete alongside motorcycles. Initially based around what would become the Indy Circuit, the track continued to develop as its popularity grew.

A major milestone came in 1960, when a new woodland extension created the longer Grand Prix Circuit, opening the door to international motorsport and Formula One. Between 1964 and 1986, Brands Hatch hosted 14 British and European Formula One Grands Prix, welcoming legendary drivers including Jim Clark, Jack Brabham, Niki Lauda and Nigel Mansell.

Beyond Formula One, Brands Hatch became a regular venue for the World Sportscar Championship and hosted memorable Superbike World Championship races between 1993 and 2008. Today, the circuit remains a major destination for British motorsport, hosting championships including British Superbikes, the British Touring Car Championship and international GT racing.

What Makes Brands Hatch Circuit So Special?

Unlike many modern racing circuits, Brands Hatch follows the natural contours of the surrounding Kent countryside. Its combination of steep gradients, blind corners and narrow racing lines demands concentration and precision from drivers and riders.

Three features help define the Brands Hatch experience:

  • Paddock Hill Bend: One of British motorsport's most recognisable corners, featuring a steep downhill right-hand turn that tests braking, grip and driver confidence.
  • Druids Hairpin: A tight uphill corner where competitors frequently attempt overtaking manoeuvres.
  • The Grand Prix woodland section: Fast, flowing corners surrounded by trees, giving the longer circuit its demanding character.

For spectators, the natural amphitheatre offers extensive views of the Indy Circuit, allowing fans to follow much of the action from a single location.

Understanding the Brands Hatch Circuit Layout

Brands Hatch operates two main circuit configurations, each offering a different racing experience.

The Indy Circuit uses the famous Paddock Hill Bend, Druids Hairpin and Graham Hill Bend before returning towards the start-finish straight.

The Grand Prix Circuit extends beyond the Indy layout, incorporating corners including Hawthorn Bend, Westfield and Sheene Curve. This variety allows Brands Hatch to accommodate everything from club racing and touring cars to superbikes and international GT championships.

Famous Races and Motorsport Moments at Brands Hatch

Brands Hatch has witnessed some memorable moments in British motorsport history. During its Formula One years, the circuit hosted fierce championship battles and victories by some of racing's greatest drivers.

One particularly famous occasion came in 1985, when Nigel Mansell secured his first Formula One World Championship victory at Brands Hatch, driving for Williams. The following year, Mansell won the 1986 British Grand Prix, the final Formula One World Championship race held at the circuit.

Although Formula One no longer competes at Brands Hatch, the venue continues to host major championships, including British Superbikes, British Touring Cars and international GT racing.
